Vancouver Local Immigration Partnership and the City of Vancouver hosted an in-person and a virtual discussion session, Funding Vancouver’s Newcomer Services Sector, on Thurs. Sept. 29 and Thurs. Oct. 6.

This thought leadership event brought members of immigrant and newcomer serving sectors together to uncover and identify the current and projected funding needs for immigrant and newcomer services in Vancouver.

The event included a City of Vancouver presentation visual and data-driven snapshots of demographic trends and determinants of health. Slides around the disproportionate employment in service industries, to the disproportionate experiences of income poverty for immigrants and newcomers initiated much discussion among participants.

As the afternoon progressed, lively discussions emerged from all groups in each of the round-table sessions as we discussed questions like:
  • What were the funding priorities pre-COVID? What new priorities have emerged?
  • How is the sector handling funding scaling up and scaling down?
